Programming Environment

• Just BASIC
  1. Just BASIC (local copy) , Forum, Tutorial
     • Install Just BASIC to a root folder like C:\WinApp\Just BASIC 1.01.
     • Install WinHelp32 for Windows 7, which is required to display 32-bit Help files (*.hlp) on Windows 7.
       (Download x86 or x64 and save it in your local hard disk. Don't try to run it from a remote hard disk, otherwise you will get the error message "Installer encountered an error: 0x80070003.\nThe system cannot find the path specified." )

• GNU C++
  • g++ is the traditional nickname of GNU C++, a freely redistributable C++ compiler. It is part of GCC, the GNU compiler collection.
  • On GNU operating systems, gcc is the command typically used to invoke the GNU C compiler, while g++ is the command to invoke the GCC C++ compiler.
• Dev-C++
  • Bloodshed Dev-C++ is a full-featured Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for the C/C++ programming language.
  • It uses Mingw port of GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) as its compiler.
  • Dev-C++ can also be used in combination with Cygwin or any other GCC based compiler.

Tips for Visual C++ 2010

1. Tools - Options - Text Editor - C++
   • Check "Line numbers"
   • Uncheck "Parameter information"
2. Tools - Options Projects and Solutions
   • Change the path to D:\VisualStudio2010
3. Enable on-line help so that you can press F1 to look up the syntax of a command in Visual C++
   1. Launch Help Library Manager from the "Help" menu in your software application. Click "Help" - "Manage Help settings".
   2. After HLM launches, click "Install content from Online".
   3. Choose "Visual C++", "Visual Studio Fundamentals", "Visual Studio SDK"

Code Writing

1. Draw a flowchart
2. Prepare a test case so that you will verify when your code is complete.
3. Keyin your code and check it is correct or not.
4. If the outcome differs from what you expect, ask yourself why.

How will your programming assignments be evaluated

  • For example, you can also write down 81 "cout" instructions to print out the 9x9 multiplication table, but using the loop construct certainly demonstrates better skill in programming.
  • Another example is using multiple "if" statements vs. "switch".
